Fire Damage Restoration: When Your Home is No Longer Your Castle
Smoke alarms blare in the night, rousing you and your bewildered, frightened family out of a sound,
formerly peaceful sleep. Now you stand, huddled in a group, shivering with cold and fear as the fire
department swarms around your blazing home. The four walls that once kept you safe and warm now glow
in the night. After the chaos is all over and done with, after the firemen all drive away, after the
well wishers and the onlookers return to their homes, it will be time to begin looking at fire damage
restoration.
As soon as you have counted your family members, including your pets, phone your insurance agent. This
should be done before you even consider doing any fire damage restoration of your own. The sooner you
make that phone call, the sooner you can have an adjuster come to look at your damages and make an
estimated judgment of value. Some policies will cover the cost of a stay in a hotel, so getting that
call in will get your family settled in for the night.
Once the insurance adjuster and the fire inspectors have decreed that you are able to return to your
home, you can honestly begin looking at the damages and decide what can be saved and what is beyond
hope. The room that was the focus of the fire will most likely be lost, but other rooms may fare
slightly better, and can be candidates for future fire damage restoration. Smoke and water damages can
be taken cared of with some careful cleaning in some cases. Any walls that are even remotely damaged
should most likely be replaced by a professional contractor, and the room that is most badly damaged
should be handled by experts as well. Otherwise, your fire damage restoration can usually be handled
as a do it yourself project.
Some people will base the actual amount of work they want to do to bring their home back to its
original condition by the amount of the insurance check that they receive. Some people are far more
thrifty and will try to do as much fire damage restoration by themselves as they possibly can. At the
other end of the spectrum is the spendthrift who will choose to hire out every detail no matter how
small. No matter which you choose, do not neglect safety and other important details while redoing
your home- it will not matter how beautiful it is if it is not a safe place to live. If, for instance,
you know that it was electrical issues that caused the fire, you would need to upgrade the wiring and
breaker box to make sure that this does not happen again.
Some people view a fire and the subsequent fire damage restoration activity as a chance to make some
much needed upgrades, and that may be a good idea. Consider adding integrated smoke detectors for
instance and you will not have to worry about dead batteries again. Opt to install fire extinguishers
in the kitchen, the basement and near the dryer, furnace and hot water tank if at all possible. If you
can only buy one at a time, start with the one for the kitchen and add one every time you get a little
extra money. Teach the basics of using the fire extinguishers as part of your family’s fire drill
routine.
